What gives it away

  1. An alert out of the blue

A text can copy any company’s name.

  2. An urgent request

The FTC says real companies won’t ask for information about your account by text.

  3. A link to tap

It can lead to a fake page. Open the company’s app instead.

What’s going on

A text can copy a company’s name. An urgent request to follow a link does not prove it came from them.

If you already tapped the link

  • If you typed a password, change it in the company’s app or website, and anywhere else you use it. Then turn on two-step verification.
  • If you shared card or bank details, call the number on your card or statement right away.
  • If you gave your Social Security number, go to IdentityTheft.gov.

Report it

Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), report it as junk in your messaging app, then report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
