The safe move
Hang up and check your order in the retailer’s or delivery company’s app yourself. If you need help, call a customer-service number you know is genuine.

What gives it away
1
A familiar name on caller ID
Caller ID can be faked, and so can a company name.
2
A problem you didn’t expect
Check the order in the retailer’s or delivery company’s app yourself.
3
Card details on a surprise call
Pressure to pay during an unexpected call doesn’t prove the caller is real.

What’s going on
Caller ID can be faked. A familiar company name and pressure to pay during an unexpected call don’t prove the caller is genuine.
If you already gave your card
Call the number on the back of your card right away. Report the payment and ask for a refund.
Watch your card statement for charges you don’t recognize.
Safe move: Don’t engage. The FTC says real payments arrive on their own by Venmo, PayPal or check, with no claim forms or fees. If you expect one, open the payment app yourself to check.
