What’s going on
The FTC announced on Sept. 17 that Amazon would start automatic refunds on Oct. 1 to millions of additional customers under the Prime settlement, paid by Venmo, PayPal or mailed check, with no claim forms, and up to a reported $200. The FTC warned that anyone claiming to be from the FTC about it is likely a scam, and that no one from Amazon will ask for money to get a refund. Real money landing in accounts makes a fake “refund” call easier to believe.
If you already paid or shared your login
- Call your bank right away, using the number on your card or statement, and ask them to reverse any payment you didn’t make.
- Change your online banking password, and on any other account that uses the same one. Then turn on two-step verification.
- If you paid with a gift card, payment app or wire transfer, contact that company right away and ask for a refund.
